IndicationsAzathioprine is used as an immunosuppressant antimetabolite either alone or more commonly in combination with other agents (usually corticosteroids) and procedures which influence the immune response. Therapeutic effect may be evident only after weeks or months and can include a steroid-sparing effect thereby reducing the toxicity associated with high dosage and prolonged usage of corticosteroids.Azathioprine in combination with corticosteroids and/or other immunosuppressive agents and procedures is indicated to enhance the survival of organ transplants such as renal transplants cardiac transplants and hepatic transplants; and to reduce the corticosteroid requirements of renal transplant recipients.Azathioprine is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe Crohn's disease in patients in whom corticosteroid therapy is required in patients who cannot tolerate corticosteroid therapy or in patients whose disease is refractory to other standard first line therapy.Azathioprine either alone or more usually in combination with corticosteroids and/or other medicines and procedures has been used with clinical benefit (which may include reduction of dosage or discontinuation of corticosteroids) in a proportion of patients suffering from the following:severe rheumatoid arthritis; systemic lupus erythematosus; dermatomyositis and polymyositis; auto-immune chronic active hepatitis; pemphigus vulgaris; polyarteritis nodosa; auto-immune haemolytic anaemia; chronic refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura; ulcerative colitis.

From Gulf News: Runners should avoid prescription drugs. Statins may increase production of the enzyme creatine kinase, and hence heighten chances of muscle damage in athletes. Marathon running has increased in popularity over the past three decades, with participation in the United States rising from 25,000 runners in 1976 to nearly 470,000 in 2008. Many professional and recreational runners take prescription drugs, unaware of potential side-effects that affect runners in particular. One such class of drugs, called statins, which includes medicines such as Lipitor, Crestor and Pravachol, lowers blood cholesterol by inhibiting a cholesterol-producing enzyme and may even lower the risks of heart attack and further cardiovascular disease in a narrow category of patients. A new study forthcoming in the American Journal of Cardiology examined the effect of statins on creatine kinase (CK), an enzyme linked to muscle damage. Elevated levels of CK in the blood and muscle after exercise correlates with muscle damage. The study, conducted by Dr Beth Parker of the Henry Low Heart Centre at Connecticut's Hartford Hospital, is the first to measure CK levels in athletes taking statins after physical activity in a real-life environment rather than in a university laboratory.
